Recap of the 2015 IDEA Teaching and Learning Assessment Workshop
By Melissa Linenberger
February 2-4, 2015, we held our annual IDEA workshop. This year we had 60 client attendees and welcomed five of our contacts at Campus Labs, our technology partner, to join the conversation. What a conversation it was! While the workshop was focused on the principles of the IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction (SRI) instrument, we also talked about progress happening at IDEA with our new delivery platform and products. The excitement in the room was contagious!
We introduced a new format for the workshop this year, in the form of tracks for beginning SRI users, review of SRI, and best practices of SRI. The beginning sessions were devoted to learning the basics about the SRI, including how to choose learning objectives for the Faculty Information Form and report interpretation. The next track was a refresher for experienced SRI users and covered the use of the IDEA SRI in a balanced faculty evaluation system and for assessing group performance. For track three we introduced two of our “super users” and had the pleasure of learning how they use the SRI on their campuses. We then discussed the all-important question of how to increase survey response rates.
Much of the excitement at this year’s workshop surrounded our new SRI platform, IDEA-CL. This platform allows for mobile delivery of the instrument, allowing for in-class capture of the students’ ratings on mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, and online interactive reports. Our clients were able to learn how to use this new delivery platform first hand.
Thank you to all presenters and attendees at the workshop! Our best resources are our clients. The annual workshop provides the opportunity for our clients to interact with one another and share ideas and suggestions.
